Re: IIGS/MAC sharing printer

Mark,
depending on how far apart the two rooms are, you have two
choices. One is to get a switch box and plug the printer
into that with a "straight through" cable. Then plug normal
IW2 cables into the computers and switch box.

I believe you could have cables as long as 20' without
a problem.

If logistics do not permit that, then you can get an Appletalk
card for the ImageWriter II (Sequential sells two models, the
more expensive one having 1 MB of buffer RAM) and share the printer
via AppleTalk. The other advantage here is that you would
then have a functioning network, and you could share your files
on the PowerMac with your IIGS via Personal File Sharing.

You would need, in addition to the Appletalk card, three phonenet
connectors, two terminators (usually sold with the phonenet
connectors) and two appropriate lenghts of regular phone cable.

Most IIe and IIGS programs will print fine this way, although
Printshop and Printshop GS and Companion will not. If that is
a concern, then the direct connect method is necessary. However,
AppleWorks, FrEdWriter, and all Apple IIGS Desktop Programs
print fine this way, as do all Mac programs.
