I assume it works fine when you use ORCA?  Have you checked that the
GNO prefixes are set up correctly?  Which version of ORCA/C and which
version of GNO?

The "compress" command is one of the really nasty commands included in
ORCA (the other one is "switch").  They do direct block accesses to
modify directories.  GS/OS will not allow a block write operation if
there are any open files on the volume.  If your libraries folder is
on your boot disk, then this explains it (the Sys.Resources file is
always open).

All you need to do is to alphabetise the library files in the
directory (the order of any subdirectories is not important).

You can move individual files out of the libraries folder using the
move or rename command, then move them back in the correct order.
