Frustrating problem with GNO & ORCA

I hope someone can help me; I'm at my wits' end.

The problem is in compiling ORCA/C programs from GNO. No matter how short
the program or what it's supposed to do, I get the message

   5/cc: I/O error

when I use GNO's "compile" command. Prefix 5 is the orca/languages directory,
and the file CC is in there, but it's not being used correctly by GNO, it
seems. What could be the problem here?

To make matters worse, since I reinstalled GNO to (supposedly) make it work
with ORCA, I get a host of Unresolved Reference errors when I try to compile
programs from the ORCA shell. According to the manual, this happens when
the orca/libraries directory is out of order, and this can be fixed with the
compress command; but I only get ProDOS "Access not allowed" messages when I
try this. ARGH!

This problem has been plaguing me for over a month now. I'm almost ready to
sell my firstborn to whoever can help me fix what's wrong.
