Do they just stay there? Does Ctrl-Apple-Reset have any effect (any
sound, or visible change to the screen)?
I saw something very like this with an Apple IIc belonging to a friend
of a friend the other day. I couldn't think of anything obvious as a
cause for this. Swapping the CPU, MMU and IOU chips with a working IIc
didn't help.
I got the impression that there may have been an address or data bus
fault - the screen was basically full of random garbage characters,
but the characters were fine, so the video generation circuitry was
OK.
Some of the characters were changing rapidly. In one case, I saw part
of the "Apple //c" message at the top of the screen after powering up,
but the rest of the screen was garbage.
The garbage screen contents is likely to be due to random memory
contents after a power up. The computer isn't running well enough to
get to the routine which clears the screen.
Does this sound at all like your problem?
Does anyone have any suggestions for my problem? I don't have the
machine any more, but I can probably get it back in a few days to try
any suggested tests.
