What kind of MO drive and SCSI card are you using on the GS?  I have a 128MB
Fujitsu MO drive hooked to a RAMFast with latest ROMs and it works fine...

Also, if you do use the GS to do the backup, don't use Archiver to do a 
volume (image) backup as it won't restore properly.  You must use file
backups with Archiver.
