Well, a playing with the chips didn't do it.  In fact, I accidently broke 
a leg off of one (those things were attached quite firmly and and fully), 
but that was fixed :)

: Can you get the self test to run if you pull all the cards out of the system?  

I tried the apple-control-reset command, but it would only freeze the 
changing white blocks on the screen until I lifted up.  I've removed all 
the cards with no difference in operation.  It won't even beep when I 
turn it on.

: The good news is that it's usually just one chip, and not always 
: the same one.  So you can likely swap chips to get things running, 
: altho you should plan on more through repairs for the long run.
