Offline Newsreader!

Miles Fudge made the whip sing this tune to me:

M| Sure there are at least two offline readers for the Apple II that I
  | am aware of: for the IIgs try TMQWK.0.6 ( I don't know where I got
  | it) and for the IIe, //c try 2qwk! v1.24 (available on FTP sites,
  | this one is called IIQWK1.24, I think). Enjoy.

Miles, what happened to your "scroll" sig line? :) I changed mine from
yours <thanks again> to this today...

Anyhow, yes, confirmation that 2qwk! does indeed read newsgroups; I
checked out some Usenet data via a QWK packet earlier today. ONE NOTE
TO BE AWARE OF: At present 2qwk! only supports 999 conferences so if
you're on a board that numbers things to the fourth digit (as many
boards do to reduce the amount of processing), you could have problems.

If you only wish to read: change the NDX filenames and the datafile
which assigns conf name to numbers to 3 digits (ex: make 1035 into,
say, 135) and you can read like nothing ever happened.

If you wish to reply as well: uh, you'll have to do some editing to the
BBSID.MSG file to change the 3-digit codes [see previous par.] back to
the original 4-digit numbers, so they'll upload correctly. This could
be kind of messy so be forewarned.

Without the above editing, or a fix to the code in 2qwk! (I've emailed
the author -- Hey Tom, you get that mail last month? -- as well as
posted a note to the guy who did some work on the NDX assimilator), the
program won't recognise conferences with 4-digit numbers as having
messages in them. Hope this helps, and thanks for mentioning 2qwk! on
the air again, Miles...
