IIe emulator drive questions...

I've got an old Disk ][ clone laying around that I'd like to use with my 
IIe card in my Mac.  I know a Disk ][ can be used with an adapter in a 
//c, and that the "grey UniDisk" Apple specifies for the IIe card can 
also be used with the //c.  My question is this: Will an adapted Disk ][ 
fry my IIe card, or is this grey-only mandate only one of Apple's ploys 
to get someone to rebuy something they already have?  I'll be using the 
Disk ][ as the only external drive.  Any comments would help.
