Echo II emulation?
Hi,
I've asked this question a few times before. The reason I keep asking is
that, I figure, every few years, some new people might have found the group
who might be able to shed some new light on this subject. So if you're
saying "This is the third time you've asked this! Please, just accept the
fact that it's not possible/nobody knows how to do it/etc. and get over it!"
now you know why I keep bringing it up.
As some of you know, I'm blind. I have three real Apple systems, and I
use various forms of the Echo II speech synthesizer, in combination with the
Echo's companion software called Textalker, to use my Apple systems.
Unfortunately, no Apple emulator that I know of can emulate the Echo, so
Textalker is useless in an emulator. Furthermore, the only emulators I know
of that make the screen contents available in a form accessible to Windows
screen readers are old Dos or Linux programs that are either unsupported,
offer very limited emulation, or both. So I'm wondering if anyone knows how
to emulate the Echo hardware. I seem to recall that it uses a Texas
Instruments chip, although I might be wrong about this. It definitely speaks
using the same methodology of devices like the Speak 'n Spell. In addition
to Textalker, there are also software packages that use sets of prerecorded
words, or even prerecorded phrases, spoken by the Echo. These are not just
digitized files though, but a different methodology. I know, since it gives
the speech a certain synthetic/computerized sound I've come to love.
I have binaries of several different versions of the Textalker software
if that would help anyone, if there's even any interest in seeing if this
can be done. If the source code for Textalker still exists, I don't know
anybody who has a copy. I'm sure if someone could just figure out how the
Echo hardware works, the software would take care of itself.
Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Am I totally off my rocker?
