A local Apple IIgs user has asked that I help him track down a
problem with his system. If you know the source of this problem, or a
possible solution to it, I will pass that information on to him as he
doesn't have Internet access...
The problem is this: A few weeks ago, this person unplugged his
Apple 5.25 drive daisy-chained to an Apple 3.5 drive. Unfortunately, he did
this while the GS was still powered on and seems to have damaged something.
Each drive now functions when plugged directly in to the GS's smartport, but
the 5.25 drive acts _dead_ if daisy-chained through the Apple 3.5 drive.
Since he uses both drives frequently, he finds it quite annoying to have to
keep disconnecting drives in order to use one (and thus can't be used at the
same time either). So the question is, what was damaged? The Apple 3.5
drive or perhaps the IWM controller on his ROM 3 motherboard? I suspect he
blew a component on the Apple 3.5 analog board that feeds power to other
drives down the chain, but have no way of telling for sure. He'd like to
know if it's possible to inexpensively fix this...
