-> Advice needed: drive & //gs
Hi-
(hard drive)
I recently bought a used //gs and have been having some troubles. I'd
really appreciate any advice or information you have.
- I'm pretty limited on memory with my //gs. I'm not sure exactly, but the
previous owner said the machine has about 1 MB of RAM. I'm expecting about 2
MB more in the mail soon.
Anyway, my problem is how to run software that requires (nearly) that 1MB of
RAM. Is there a way to bypass the Finder (Windows) setup, so I just run
something from my harddrive in ProDOS?
For example, I have the game Gnarly Golf. It requires two 3.5 disks to play.
I have only one 3.5 drive, so when it needs to change disks, it grinds through
the 5.25 drives a few times, and checks everything before asking for the
swap.
I've thought of copying the files to my HD (old Vulcan 40MB), but it will not
run the software since the Finder program already takes up the needed memory.
It just crashes.
The way to start the program is by pressing Ctrl-Reset during bootup to get
to the Basic prompt, then type PR#5 to boot the 3.5 floppy. Is there a way to
boot from a partition on the hard drive? Or any other tricks?
I've noticed Copy II+ references the 4 hard drive partitions as:
/AE1 Slot 7, drive 1
<part. 2> Slot 7, drive 2
<part. 3> Slot 4, drive 1
<part. 4> Slot 4, drive 2
Thanks for reading this. If you know anyone who can help, please let me know.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
-Steve
