My apple 2e is gets 9600 carrier and using LAP-M 38400 bps using
that chip that I plugged into my apple SSC.  It's very stable for
uploading and dowloanding.   I used to get on with 14400 but the
driver I got from Proterm seems to never connect at 14400.  I 
guess the init string makes it work that way.  I'm so happy with
it I have never tinkered with it.  Does anyone know any more about
this?  I'm sure I'm only a user, not a real hardware techie.
Before this SSC add on things were not so stable.  I took my SSC
out of slot 2 and put it into slot 1 and got less errors on 
data transfers (no
