It is a resource manager error (see the list of general error types I
posted yesterday).  $1E42 means that the Resource Manager detected a
damaged resource file when trying to write to it (the exact reason is
"damaged free space list").  In this case, it is probably the Desktop
file on your system disk.  Delete it and the problem should go away
(but you'll have to re-locate all your applications again).

This sort of problem could be caused by rebooting at the wrong time
(e.g. the file was partially updated).
