  Well, you can get 256 colours per pixel, no matter where on the screen
the pixels are. You may not be able to have a different set of 256 colours
per line though, since that's not how standard VGA works.  But I could be

  Since it has been said that the Second Sight board has a pallette of
16 million colours to choose from, this would suggest that the red, green
and blue components are 8-bit intensity values (256 ^ 3 = 16,777,216 colours).
This would mean that you could indeed have 256 shades of gray.
