Multi-player games before 1983?

I am doing research on the history of video games and am curious to find if 
anyone knows of multi-player games that existed before 1983.

The game should allow two players to play each other in a way where the two 
players are not looking at the same screen, but they may see the other player 
on their screen.  They may be connected through modem, over network, or 
whatever...

Any clues?
