"Noisemaker": Need G.I. AY-3-8910 sound chip app note
Has anyone out there used the "Noisemaker" card on an S-100 or Apple II
system?
Does anyone have the application note that engineers at General
Instruments (now Microchip), possibly on an unofficial basis, issued on
the AY-3-8910 sound chip? They also produced a 28-pin '8912 which didn't
have the I/O port. I have heard that the '8910 was actually developed by
Western Digital, and that W.D. engineers may really have been responsible
for the Application Note; I have not been able to confirm this.
What I'm looking for is not the Data Sheets. This Application Note was
put together by some engineers; it's 40 pages or more, and it's
typewritten with hand-drawn drawings. It's not typeset.
I'm looking for information on making better-sounding sounds, besides
simple beep tones. I want to make it sound like a bell ringing...
I just received, from Michael MacKenzie, photocopies from a 64 page
booklet entitled: AY-3-8910/8912 Programmable Sound Generator Data Manual.
(Page 64 contains an ad for "Noisemaker (S-100 Bus) & Noisemaker II (Apple
II Bus)" cards, from Advanced Computer Products, circa 1980.) The table
of contents listed below. (Thanks, Michael!)
It doesn't actually cover making a bell-ringing sound; does anyone out
there know how to do it? Is it just a matter of programming the right
envelope?
