There is already a version of lex included with GNO (flex). There is
also bison (a version of yacc) and awk. I don't know how good they
are.
A C++ compiler would certainly be nice, but I can hardly see any
justification for writing one from ground up. Porting an existing
one, or modifying an existing C compiler would be a better idea.

Yes. If you want the program to work as well as possible under GNO,
you should use the latest version of ORCA/C (2.0.3). The ORCA 1.x
languages do text I/O in a manner which is rather ugly.
The GNO shell/kernel is closely compatible with version 2.0 of the
ORCA Shell, which is included with all the 2.x languages.
The only languages which can easily be used for GNO development are C
and assembly.
By the way: if you have access to the comp.sys.apple2.programmer
group, it may be more appropriate for any further discussion of this
matter. You may also like to cross-post to comp.sys.apple2.gno.
