For portions of the past two summers, I worked as a psychologist at a large
institution for the mentally retarded.  This institution, Whitten Center,
houses 800 individuals, most of whom are at the lowest levels of 
intelligence:
severely or profoundly retarded.

My department had sixteen full-time psychologists and clinical counselors
who competed for typing time on several Apple II computers.  Apple II and
Appleworks are widely used throughout the institution.  The Psychology
Department could use several more Apple II computers but is unable to
purchase them. Staff would be interested to get a donated IIe, IIc, or IIgs.
Workers are already skilled at using these models.

If anyone is considering donating an Apple II to a thrift shop, it would
be far more advisable to donate it to Whitten Center instead.  Even the
older models now in use have been carefully maintained.  The future of items
given to a thrift shop is uncertain, but an Apple given to Whitten Center
will be put to immediate and productive use.  (Use will be by the staff, not
by the retarded individuals themselves.)

Whitten Center will reimburse the donor for surface UPS shipping costs and
also will provide an official acknowledgment letter for the donor, stating
the declared value of the donation requested by the donor.  This letter will
help the donor get a tax break for the contribution.
