A friend of mine had this problem with his Intel 14.4 modem.
The problem, I found, was that the modem was set to return extended
result codes. While this is not normally a problem on most modems,
like my Hayes, which report something like this:
CARRIER 9600
PROTOCOL: LAPM
COMPRESSION: V.42bis
CONNECT 19200
His modem concatenated the whole thing into one line, like
CONNECT 19200/ARQ/LAPM... etc.
Apparently, proterm can't handle this, and does not detect
the "CONNECT" message. The solution, at least in this case, was
to turn off the extended result codes, so the modem reports only:
CONNECT 19200
and nothing else... <sigh> I wish manufacturers would agree
upon and adopt one standard instead of many. Of course, this is not
the only example of this problem in industry today... Good luck~
