Which version of Proterm are you using?  Proterm 3.0 and above should do 
it just fine.  Versions of Proterm below 3.0 didn't support 14400 in the 
auto-dial and would require you to use the method you describe for 
getting online.

If you're using Proterm 3.0 or greater, make sure you are using the 
correct driver.  USR HST/HST Dual (RTS/CTS).  Set your baud rate to 57600 
and just let it connect.  Don't mess with the default Modem Init string.

Unless your proterm has a bug, it should work just fine.
