AppleColor RGB problems
Just the other day, I was playing around with my second (rarely used)
Apple IIgs, and noticed something I hadn't before. The colors and brightness
seemed more correct on screen, even though that particular RGB monitor is
in need of some minor repairs/adjustment. I really noticed a difference when
I went to use try "Out of This World". I could see the _entire_ picture without
having to turn out the brightness to the maximum, and the colors matched closer
to the version I had previously seen on the SuperNintendo port. That is, when
the car drives up to the lab, the building and sky are a blue color -- on my
regular RGB all those colors are a greyish-purple (closer to grey actually).
When I quit back to the Finder, I noticed screen displays the desktop
backround as a medium-blue, while the other monitor a bluish-purple in
comparison. Next I examined the color palette mixer in DreamGrafix, and noticed
my greyscales aren't actually grey, but rather hues of a greyish-biage. Even
my pure white looks a bit off, more of an off-white with a hint of yellow tint.
And most annoying of all, the screen takes several minutes to warm-up, otherwise
the brightness is too low. I also noticed even after this period of warming up,
I still can't achieve the maximum brightness level with knobs turned all the
way to the back (OOTW screens are too dark to see all color detail).
Now, I'd swap screens, BUT the rarely used RGB has some problems, some
of which I'm not sure are normal or can be corrected. Firstly, the top 1/3rd
of the screen is out of focus. It has a redish blur to it, so any graphics
(especially text!) is fuzzy and difficult to read in the upper part of the
screen. Next problem is this: After the screen has been on a few minutes,
it starts to pulse the colors a bit, shifting from normal to a pink-ish tint.
Eventually it shifts to this pink-tint completely and stays locked like this.
White text and all graphics then have this annoying hue of pink tint which
won't go away. Finally...even though the brightness seems more correct, it
does seem a little too high. I have to turn the brightness all the way to the
front to achieve a brightness simular to my usual screen's brightness, set to
the center position. And perhaps it's my imagination, but colors seem a bit
washed or faded in certain programs (this may be a result of the "pink-tint"
I referred to that kicks in after a few minutes and stays). So unless I can
repair this second screen, it's useless as a replacement, and just an
annoying reminder that my other screen my be color blind, so to speak.. :/
..If anyone recognizes some of these problems, please tell me what the cause
is and if there's a way to fix things. It really annoys me to think I've
been viewing GS graphics (color hue/brightness) differently than everyone
else all these years. Can't understand what would cause a monitor's color-tint
to get messed up if it was never opened (at least to my knowledge).
