Joe,
I agree that sharing information and educating others are important.
However, you are going about it in the wrong way. Instead of using
comp.sys.apple2 as the end-all be-all information source for everything
related to the Apple II, you need to realize how the hierarchy of the
net should be used advantageously. I use my computer for games, word
processing, spreadsheets, databases, communication, etc. There is
probably a specific news group for each of these topics. Expecting to
hold a thorough discussion on any of these topics in c.s.a2 just because
I use my apple II to do them would not be reasonable. It is better to
use the hierarchial model instead of yours because:
1. Having a platform specific discussion of a platform independent
topic precludes input from people knowledgable on the topic who use a
different platform.
2. Each platform specific group would have to have identical
discussions if there were no central area. This would lead to
unnecessary duplication of information, and be an extreme waste of
bandwidth.
3. You mention having to wade through hundreds of articles, but can you
imagine the size of comp.sys.apple2 under your system? I use my apple
II to view pictures, but I sure don't want the traffic of the various
picture groups coming through c.s.a2!
In short, I posted this to show you the wisdom of the current system.
Hopefully you now see the drawbacks of the "flat" information system,
and will use the net as it should be used. If you still think your
system is better, get a Unix workstation and load the entire online
works of man into the root directory and make it available. If you
think about it people are just proposing you be more web-like. Later.
