Annoying DuoDisk polling from w/in sys601 ?

Why is it that within sys601 on the IIgs that everytime I approach the 
desktop (whether just booting up or exiting from a program) that the 
system software feels like it needs to poll all my devices to see what's 
out there ?  Can this be defeated?  My DuoDisk takes for-freaking-ever to 
go through the two drives, grind a bit, and finally get on to my second 
HD partition along with my 3.5" drive.  Thanks for your help.
