Hmmm. What SCSI card do you have? I used to have these problems
myself a while back; it was either my HS SCSI or my RamFAST looking
for devices it thought it could find. If you have a RamFAST, go into
the configuration program, and remove all off-line volumes from its
device lists. You should also set the timeout to short. Then, save
the configs, and exit.
This thing may be a 504-ism; get System 6.0. It's much cooler.

If you mean system toolsets, you can look in the tools directory in
the system folder on the boot disk. That'll tell you which ones are
present by number. If you want names and versions of the running
tools, lots of little GS programs were written way back when to list
them. (I've seen maybe 15 programs that list them. Did people have
major problems with original ideas? :) It seems that both cco and
grind have cleaned off most of these little programs, though.

ADB can be daisy-chained, split by a Y-cable, etc... Just keep less
than 16 devices on the chain, and <16 feet (or is that meters) of
cable on the whole length. Hint: ADB cables are the same type as SVHS
cables, so drop down to your local Radio Shack and you can get
extender cables for real cheap.
Putting an Apple on its side may not be too good for the cards
inside. IBM cards are held down at both ends (unless they're the mini
boards) by clips and screws. That way, they can be put on their side
without any undue harm. But, Apple II cards aren't secured at the
other end, so gravity may cause some strain on the cards. Be careful,
whatever you do.
