general stuff and questions

Well I've been kinda out of the apple II world since I've come to college.

I'm surprised at the life the apple still has by the looks of this newsgroup.

ALthough little has come out for the apple line in comparison to other
computers I still have my trusty GS at home waiting for me to come back
and use it. I have a modem and proterm 2.1 as well as shrinkit. I used to be
heavily into my modem when I got it awhile ago (Datalink 2400). In college
I've been surrounded by Macs, Ibms, Nexts, and SunStations and having used
them all I'm kinda reluctant to go back to the GS. But it looks like there
is still life after all in that ole machine.

Currently my little brother just uses it to mudd and write papers. But I'm
sure I can get more out of it with a little bit of effort.

My questions: What is GNU and how do I get it...what memory and other re
requirements do I need to run it....I heard something about multitasking
in there somewhere and Unix also.

I have 3 computer accounts in my school and I can logon onto them through my
modem. Since I was just introduced to ftp's I only know how to download
the programs onto disk from my account through direct connection. I'm really
lost as to how I would do it using a modem and my account. I have proterm.

HOw does one get those binaries off the comp.binaries.apple2? What program
to I need to unbin them. Could use some help here.

One final and interesting question:

I have an HP48gx calculator and a mac cable. I've noticed that the cable could
quite easily hook up to the back of my GS serial modem port because it's
the same as the mac's serial modem port. I would like to know if it's
possible for me to store HP48gx programs on the GS using this cable. If
this is possible it would make my GS a lot more useful...I could ftp
during the summertime and get programs for my HP, download them (in binary
format) and use them on my HP. I could also store HP programs on my GS!
Does proterm support Kermit? If not, what comm prog on the gs does? thanks!

I used to be heavily into video and I hooked up my GS rca video out jack into
my camcorder and produced very nice titles for my videos- I could do graphs
also. REcorded some animations also from Film Director. Was very nice.
3200 pics came out COOL! VERY IMPRESSIVE! Try it out sometime.

ps I recall something that was in the back of an A+ magazine that explained
how to build some sort of device which let you fine tune the signal from
the rca jack so you didn't get as much bleeding of colors on the video
recording...anyone know what issue or have info on the specs of the
circuit? I'd like to build it now since I've come a long way from
high school and college and learned a lot more about circuits....
