Not to mention the necessary hardware.  :-)

When Apple added the AppleTalk firmware to the IIc, they were planning
on implementing it via an external box which plugged into the printer
port of the IIc.  This box would basically be a small computer,
probably similar in design to the IIe Workstation Card.  This device
was never released (if it was even made).

The code in the IIc ROM would only be used to hook into ProDOS (for
compatibility with the IIe Workstation Card) and would pass calls and
data to and from the external box.

The minimal AppleTalk code was removed in a later version of the IIc ROM.
