Looking for SmartPort info

Hullo, people!
 
I just got my hands on a program that lets me read lots of
information about my smartport devices, and I'm curious as to the
meaning of some of it. Anybody know what reference I should be
looking in for information on (for instance) what do the return
codes from a ReadDefectData translate to? The program I've got just
spits a bunch of raw hex numbers out, with no interpretation
available. Did Apple ever put that sort of information in a book? If
so, what's the title, and if you have it, the numbers off it. I'd
like to get this one on order ASAP, so any help that you can give
will be appreciated.
