?chr$(21) from BASIC will do it.. or you can hit control-Q, or you can hit
escape-4 (though you're not really back in the "real" 40 column mode, you're
still using the 80column card's RAM.)  

PR#0, if I remeber correctly, did something like this..

] F O O E Y

? S Y N T A X  E R R O R

really quite hard to read, given the narrowness of the characters and
the odd spacing.
