I'm not concern, but I seem to recall something about a red dot
somewhere in a visable place on these faulty IIgs powersupplies. As well,
something about those with a shiny-finish as opposed to a brushed finish.
I don't have the info off hand, but checking the serial number above should
give your friend the information he needs.
However, I think the recall offer has long expired, or at least it has
from this part of Canada. In August 1991 my ROM 3's powersupply started acting
flaky and died a few weeks later (very unusual: The powersupply was just over
a year old, nothing feeding power off it expect a 3.5, 5.25, 1mb card and
stereo/digitizer card. I never mistreated the system either). I asked my
Apple dealer if it was possible my powersupply was the defective model, yet
I was told they wouldn't honor that even if it were. In the end I had to shell
out $98 Cdn ($113.25 Cdn total -- found the bill :) to swap my dead supply
for a new refurbished one. They also warned me _not_ to attempt to repair
it myself, for if the glue seal was broken, they charge me double ($196 Cdn)
to do the very same swap! (Obviously they fix dead powersupplies for a couple
of cents in parts and then resale them at a ridiculous cost).
