This has come up a few times, so maybe it oughtta be added to the FAQ. I'm the
one who posted the article about upgrading to ROM 3. My original IIgs (a
signature edition bought back in March '87) started out as a ROM 0 then moved
up to ROM 01 and finally ROM 3. I have two ROM 01's on hand built from spare
parts as well. So I've used each ROM version extensively. The advantages of
ROM 3 are too numerous to list completely but here are some of the major ones:

Appletalk can be in slots 1 and 2 in addition to 7, leaving 7 open for a HD
Improved spartport firmware resulting in faster floppy I/O
More tools in ROM where code runs faster plus newer versions built in
It's possible to resize the RAM disk without power cycling or the self test
A boot from Appletalk option in the control panel (scan won't boot a 01 from
Appletalk)
More DMA compatible memory since 1 mb is built in
Sticky keys and keyboard mouse built into the hardware
A less noisy design resulting in cleaner sound ( on one of my 01's you hear
a faint buzzing in the speaker which changes pitch when you move the pointer
up and down a menu making a sound resembling a musical scale)
More later when I have time...
