I don't see why a reversed printer cable shouldn't work. I'm not a cable
expert, however.

As for a parallel card, just about any card will do. I'd stay away from
the Grappler +, though. In my experience it was nearly impossible to
install, and its extra text and graphics features are too outdated to work
on HP DeskJet printers of any kind.
