I use a DEClaser 1152 (which can be found for $599 WITH Toner) with my GS.
Like the 4M, it has AppleTalk, serial, and parallel ports. For most jobs,
such as word processing, printing SHR graphics, envelopes, labels, etc, I
use it in postscript mode using the LaserWriter driver included in 6.0.1
hooked to my ROM3's AppleTalk port.

But I realized that non-Apple postscript printers aren't completely compatible
with the LaserWriter driver in 6.0.1. So, for anything complex, I flip the
switch on a serial switch box and change my control panel settings for a
direct-connect printer, and use Harmonie's HP driver to print. Since the
printer is auto-switching, like your 4M, it goes into HP mode when data starts
coming in on the RS232 port.

A word of warning: printing this way through the serial port is pretty slow --
the Harmonie driver renders the page image in memory and then dumps it to
the serial port. For 300 dpi printing, this is a lot of data, and it takes
a while just to transfer the data to the printer. Does anyone know if the
Express spooler works ok with the Harmonie driver? Parallel would be a bit
faster but since I don't print incredibly complex documents too often, this
has worked for me.

The DEClaser is no speed demon, but it does also work with the ImageWriter
PostScript emulator in 6.0.1, so once I download that I can print to it
as if it was an Imagewriter. This would work great for those of you who
would like to print from Print Shop GS to a laser printer (Hi Joe :)

Anyway, in short, Yes, the HP LJ 4M should work fine with your GS.
