Beneath Apple ProDOS by Don Worth and Pieter Lechner (Quality Software books)
(ISBN 08359-0463-6) has an EXCELLENT discussion of directory/file structure.
I bought my copy years and years ago for $20

ProDOS has no RWTS routine - instead it has separate read and write and 
open and close routines.  (all discussed in the book)
