First of all, the original poster did follow-up and note that the problem was
with the tracking mechanism, and that the 'clobber treatment' that I used to
use all the time fixed it. But that isn't important.
What IS important is a very simple warning to ALL DISK ][ USERS OUT THERE...
There is ONE very common chip failure in the Disk ][. Unfortunately, like Rob,
I can't remember which one. Fortunately, it has never happened to me, but I've
seen it lots of times. If you do not connect the Molex connector
properly...that is, if you off-set it by one pin position in any direction
(there are three ways to screw it up), you WILL blow one of the chips in the
drive the first time you apply power. Only one chip gets blown, and it doesn
not indicate a problem with any other part of the drive.
