Apple 800k to 1.44 conversion ?!
I got a disk stuck in my 800k Apple drive today, and upon taking it apart I
noticed the lever switch that indicates write protection, and on the other side
there is a similar switch where the HD notch should be, but a metal plate
extends outward so the switch is always close.
I know this is a stupid idea, but I know companies have done similar things in
the past, so I'll suggest it anyway. Has anyone tried removing that little
plate and seeing if that would enable the drive to do 1.44? I don't have
a 1.44 meg apple drive, so I don't know if there are some enormous circuitry
differences that I don't know about, but it would be quite cool to make a
superdrive with a hand drill :)
Of course, I too doubt this would actually work, but if anyone wants to give
it a shot, it shouldn't hurt anything (of course, the standard disclaimers
apply... if you kill your drive, it's not my fault :)
later...
