There was recently a brief discussion of adding new keyboard
translations to the Apple IIGS System Software, especially for use in
countries other than the United States. My latest program, called The
Localizer, allows everyday users to install a new keyboard translator
easily.
The first release of The Localizer, which installs a Swedish keyboard
translator, is now in beta-testing, and will probably be released
within a week.
Once the beta-test cycle is complete, The Localizer will be available
for others to create editions that install other translators than
Swedish, simply by replacing and/or modifying a few resources. The
procedure for doing so is explained in the documentation for the
program. If you do create a new translation, I ask merely that you
send me a copy of the program and revised documentation (there are
other conditions explained in the documentation, but they're very
reasonable). I sincerely hope that several more translators are
released.
The Localizer automatically calculates appropriate resource IDs, so
you can install up to 252 new translators automatically, by running
different editions of the program.
If you already have a translator that you'd like to create a version
of The Localizer for, let me know, and I'll send you a beta copy of
the program so we can get the new edition out the door sooner! If you
have questions about The Localizer, let me know!
