    Pretty much... have you seen some of the older Macs handle file
transfers using PublicFolder over AppleTalk?  The machine pretty much
freezes up while the data is being sent.

    What would be more economical is a buffered high-speed serial port
with something like a Z80 to shuffle data from the port into a bit of
on-board RAM (say, 64K) and hold it for the CPU to retrieve it at its
leisure.
