You need a utility program which can format disks. If your one ProDOS
disk is called SYSTEM.DISK or USERS.DISK, it is likely to include such
a program.
Apple released two different "standard" utility programs which do disk
formatting (among other functions): "Filer" and "Apple II System
Utilities".
When you boot your one ProDOS disk, you should see an initial "splash"
screen which tells you which version of ProDOS you are using. What
happens after this screen goes away?
With the original system disk, a menu appeared which asked if you
wanted to enter BASIC, or run the filer or conversion program.
If you are dropped straight into BASIC (with a message at the top of
the screen saying "PRODOS BASIC", then use the CAT command to see what
else is on the disk, looking for a program called FILER or
SYSUTIL.SYSTEM, both of which have a file type of SYS (like PRODOS and
BASIC.SYSTEM).
You can try running one of these programs by using the "dash" command, e.g.
-FILER
(assuming Filer is on the disk).
There are several third-party programs which can format disks, include
AppleWorks, ShrinkIt (enhanced 128k IIe version), Copy II+, ProSel and
many others.
If you don't have any of these programs, you'll have to get hold of
one of them (somehow). The latest version of the Apple II System
Utilities is available via FTP from ftp.apple.com (on Apple II System
Disk 4.0.3), but it requires an enhanced IIe.
This disk (or an older version) is supposed to be included with all
Apple IIs. Where did you get the computer from?
To find out whether your IIe is enhanced, look at the message which
appears at the top of the screen when you reboot. If it says "Apple
//e" then you have an enhanced IIe. If it says "Apple ][" then you
have an unenhanced IIe.
