Help needed

I need some help. Lately, when I try to boot up my IIGS from a hard
drive, the thermometer fills up about a quarter inch then just stops.
Nothing else happens. I do the three finger salute and I get dumped into
the monitor. After several attempts (with the command-control-reset)
and getting dumped into the momitor each time, I finally get the
thermometer again, this time it fills up about a half inch before it
quits. I spend anywhere from 10 - 30 minutes trying to get the thing
to boot. Holding the shift down (no inits/das) doesn't help. I have
two hard drives daisy-chained on the SCSI port, a 45 meg "CMS" and an
80 meg "Cutting Edge". When the problem first occurred, I was using
the CMS as the boot drive. I tried switching them around and put System
6.01 on the Cutting Edge drive. That seemed to fix it, at least for
a couple days - then the problem came back.
Booting from the 3.5" disk doesn't appear to be a problem.

 My system:
  Apple IIGS/Woz machine
   Slot 1 - Quickie card
Slot 2 - AST vision plus (not active)
   Slot 3 - ZipChip GS (8Mhz/16k cache)
   Slot 4 - Empty
   Slot 5 - Empty
   Slot 6 - Sonic Blaster
   Slot 7 - Ramfast SCSI, Rev C, 256K
Expander Slot - 4 meg CVTech with 1 meg Apple piggyback onboard
Plus the 2 hard drives mentioned above.

  Does anyone have any suggestions?
