Well, I finally did it. I bought a IIgs. I've been using IIc's and
IIc+'s for a while, and would consider myself an accomplished user of
8-bit Apples. I've also been following c.s.a2 for a while, but have
been skipping over a lot of the GS specific posts since they didn't
apply to me. I have read the FAQ, but still have lots of questions
that the FAQ didn't cover. Please forgive me if the answers to these
questions were recently discussed, and feel free to direct me to
other sources for the info if it is available via FTP.
I will be posting the questions to different threads so that each
post doesn't become too large, and to keep them grouped thematically.
First the stats:
ROM 1
AppleColor RGB moniter
Apple 3.5 drive
Apple keyboard (slightly damaged)
Apple GS memory expansion card with 256k on board
Cost = $250
I bought this for the school office where I work. It will be used
mostly for productivity stuff; I'm not a game player. The main
reason I bought it was to have the ability to have a hard drive,
Video Overlay Card, GUI (system 6), and Mac FST. A very big priority
of mine is to have a very stable system. I can deal with little
quirks and bugs, but several of my staff are either inexperienced
users or outright computerphobes. They can't deal with the bugs and
quirks.
OK, on to the questions. I know I need to upgrade this thing to make
it useable. My first question is: What are the things I absolutely
NEED to have? What peripherals, hardware, software are your
favorites? Basically, what are the all-stars that no self-respecting
GS should be without? Based on my reading of this newsgroup,
Pointless would be on the list. What else?
