ftp help

I am really new at downloading files from ftp sites and I'm having problems.
I have GSShinkit and BinSCII on my GS already but still having problems.
It seems when ever I get the files to my computer and try to use GSShinkit,
it says that the files are damaged.  I tried this about five times and still
the same thing.  The ftp site was Caltech and I get it from my UNIX account.
At first I was getting the files as text files and then used BinSCII first but
that did nothing.  Then I tried receiving them as Binary files.  GSShinkit
finally recognized them but said that they were damaged.  Please E-Mail me and
set me in the right direction to how to get these files to work.  Thanks.
