Help with SSI game

I used to play an SSI game of strategy where you place castles on
an 8x8 (or 10x10?) grid.  It was a very simple game, but the interesting
thing was, the computer would learn as you played it.  SSI even had
contests where you could send in your "AI" and the winner received
some sort of prize.

Anyway, I can't remember what the game was called.

Please, *please*, if you remember what the game is called, let me know.
And if you remember (or have) the simple rules, that would be even better!
