FTP problems

I'm having some bizarre problems when FTP'ing apple2 files from various locations.
I can get the files with no errors fine, but when I go to unpack any of them, ShrinkIt says the archive is damaged or corrupted.
Is there some intermediate step that I need to take in order to be able to unpack files correctly?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
