Yep, good idea.  And it is indeed a fairly simple process.

If you want Seagate, get their newer 3.5" series.  Although I would 
recommend staying away from Seagate, unless you are getting their
higher capacity drives ( like 200mb and up ).

MFM is an encoding scheme.  Most if not all drives these days use RLL.  
Check in those forsale groups, people always have extra mechanisms for
sale.  Usually under $1/mb now days ( for used/good condition ones ).

Just be sure it's a SCSI drive.  Then all you have to do is pop the old
drive out.  Then stick the new drive in.  Connect the power cable, SCSI
cable, and SCSI ID cable/jumper.  The mountings are all standarized, so
it's a pop out and snap in installation.
