The rule is quite simple:
Whenever a new disk is "mounted", Finder checks for an Icons folder,
and reads each icon file in the folder. It skips any files which have
the same name as a previously loaded icon file.
Any icons on the newly inserted disk will override existing ones if
there is a conflict. In your case, it sounds like the GS+ disk has an
icon which matches all directories.
One possible solution: take a copy of the icon file from the GS+
disk, use an icon editor to remove its modified folder icon, and leave
a copy of the file in your hard disk's Icons folder. Since the name
will match any future GS+ disk's icon file, its icons will not be
loaded.
You didn't need to reboot to clear out the "new" folder icon - just
make sure the GS+ disk is ejected, and launch any application. When
you return to Finder, the icons will be back to normal.
