    That's fine for new files, but it doesn't help the ones that are
already on grind.

    Why not write a new UNIX utility that creates Binary II wrappers. 
It would work in the following way:

1.  On the UNIX system, name all the files with ProDOS-legal filenames.
2.  Run 'b2' (that's the utility) on all the files.
3.  It will automatically add a Binary II wrapper to every file using
    the current filename.
4.  Now that they have a legal ProDOS name encoded in the file, you can
    safely give them long, descriptive names.

    Anyone want to write such a utility?  :)
