HP. DJ1200C

I have developed a real interest in the Hewlett Packard DeskJet 1200C
Printer. I hope that Philip Dunnough and anybody else might be able to
share some information on what I have come up with so far and maybe more.
The only review article that I have been able to find was in HomeOffice
Computing. According to the article the HP. DJ. 1200C can be hooked up
with a serial connection simply by flipping some dip switches in the rear.
Can somebody please verify this. This is important to me because all of
the slots in my GS are full and I don't want to use a converter because it
would add to the price of the printer. The article went on to say that "
both models come with 4 MB. of RAM expandable to 20 MB. Unfortunately the
Hewlett Packard proprietary 8 MB memory boards are much more expensive
then the readily available SIMM'S memory boards." Compare this with the
information demo that the printer prints out " Standard 2 MB memory
upgrade to 26 MB via optional Simm's. " The article went on to say that "
HP's documentation was first rate: well written, liberally illustrated,
logically organized, and with an extensive trouble shooting section."
 
I called Vitesse and got hold of vice-president of marketing, I think he
said his name was Jerry something. This is what he had to say: they did
not have a driver for the 1200C but I might be able to get another driver
such as the 550C one to work, the GS would not be able to take advantage
of the printer's capability to print in 600 x 300 DPI.
 
I called Tony Diaz at Alltech and he said that Bill Hineman could make a
printer driver for any printer if he had the printer for a week. He then
would add it to the Harmonie collection. When I asked if the GS would be
able to take advantage of the printer's capability to print 600 x 300 DPI,
and what I was told he said he would have to consult with Bill Hineman and
get back to me. We haven't heard anything yet.
 
The cheapest street price I've seen so far is $1249. I have not checked my
educational sources yet. One other thing, I am not interested in the Adobe
font cart. For the price Truetype is good enough for me.
 
Once again I would appricate any information on this printer and it's
capabilities with the GS.         Jim
