Ok,
I have thought about this a bit. There are two issues here:
- Media cost. Around $30 for CD-WO (not WORM, stoopid :), which is pretty
steep. So, the solution is: Use Photo CDs. Same technology (Really.
Honestly. Exactly the same.), lower price: around $8. (Note: All prices
for the German market ... US prices might be lower). The drawback of
this is that on the CD it says 'Kodak Photo CD' instead of
'grind.isca.uiowa.edu nifty Apple // archive'. So what.
- Mastering/manufacturing cost. There are companies that will do small-
quantity CD-WO series for you. I have to dig deeper into this, the price
I have so far (again, for the German market) is: $440 for the first
CD, which can be credited to the manufacturing of more CDs of the same
data (probably wrong wording here, but I guess yah catch mah meaning,
brutha). I'd have to investigate as for the per-CD costs.
Anyway, manufacturing would be done in the US most likely, so German
prices are only good for estimating until we get US quotes :)
Hmmm ... let's start ....
A little survey
===============
Would you be interested in a CD-ROM version of the Apple // archive at
grind.isca.uiowa.edu?
_ Yes!
_ Nope, really not.
How often should this CD appear?
_ Every 2 years
_ Once a year
_ Twice a year
_ Other, please specify:
At what price would you buy the CD-ROM? Multiple answers are possible,
you can also specify a percentage likelihood of purchase.
_ I'd buy at x < $50 with ___ % certainty
_ I'd buy at $50 < x < $100 with ___ % certainty
_ I'd buy at $100 < x < $150 with ___ % certainty
_ I'd buy at $150 > x with ___ % certainty.
Please mail this survey to behrenss@informatik.tu-muenchen.de once you
filled it out. I will collect them and summarize. Your name is
not stored in the data base, neither your address.
=========================================================================
The point of this survey is to find out if we can produce CD-ROMs at
a given price in a certain quantity (e.g., if it turns out 100 people
would buy at x < $50, but in quantities of 100, a CD-ROM costs $100,
we're pooped). The point is definitely _not_ to get the max revenue
out of the CD, although the data could be used for that too :) :)
