One thing we're forgetting in these suffix wars is the .BXY filetype.  .BXY
was made for putting .SHK files on foreign systems (and if Unix ain't foreign,
what is).  The filenames could be 15 chars long and then have .BXY after that.

Downloading to a ProDOS volume, at worse, the end 4 characters would get
cut off.  At best, the Binary II envenlope would get cut out and the
true filename would be there.  Why we have .SHK and .BSQ all over the place
in 1993 is beyond me.

Wait a minute, lots of things are beyond me. :)
