I've been successful in connecting my XT laptop to my Imagewriter II (sans
Windows of course) with the following:

com1 -> DB9 to DB25 converter -> null modem connector -> handshaking gs (or
Mac) modem cable -> Imagewriter II

Also I have the batch command:

mode com1:9600,n,8,1,p
mode lpt1=com1

The cable MUST be a handshaking cable, or you must set up software
handshaking.  I found it easier to use a handshaking cable (the same cable
I use for a highspeed modem to my gs).
